The Beginning

Our story begins with the members behind Hetteen Hoist & Derrick, which was a small company that crafted unique machines for farmers. The nature of their work was seasonal and the employees often spent the off-season embarking on outdoor adventures. They needed a more convenient and efficient way to travel across the snow in order to reach the ideal spots for hunting and fishing. They crafted a working snowmobile, which captured the attention of all who saw it. They soon began manufacturing their model for customers.

Growth of Polaris® Powersports

By 1960, the company changed its name to Polaris® and was growing rapidly. A boom in the market led to the need for more management skills by the company's leadership, so Polaris® was sold to Textron. The industry growth continued into the 1970s, but then a recession hit hard. At the end of the decade, only three manufacturers in this industry were left.

Rebirth of Polaris® Powersports

The then-president of Polaris® was told to sell the company so that Textron could get out. Instead, he led a buyout and began rebuilding the company with only 100 workers. With hard work and determination, the Textron debt was repaid ahead of schedule.

In 1984, Polaris® powersports entered the ATV market. Up to this point, the ATV market had been dominated by the Japanese. In 1990, Polaris® became the first major US powersports manufacturer to build a PWC line. These are just a few of the many ways that Polaris® powersports focused on innovation and expansion. Today, the company offers a range of models for all types of outdoor adventures!
