In The Beginning

Torakusu Yamaha founded his eponymous musical instrument company back in 1887, which is where the company's unique logo comes from. The circular emblem bears three intertwined piano-tuning forks in homage to the company's beginnings as a piano and organ producer.

After decades in this industry, the company expanded into other arenas following the economic depression after World War II. Wartime manufacturing machinery was repurposed to build motorsports vehicles and the small engines to power them, which led to the creation of the first Yamaha motorcycles.

By 1955, it was time for the Yamaha Motor Company to spin off from its parent corporation. This new branch focused on two-stroke engine motorcycles that became extremely popular, to be followed by four-stroke engines in 1968.
