Hitting the trails in your utility terrain vehicle (UTV) is a great way to spend an afternoon. But it’s also an excellent way to get your work done, survey your property, and so much more. Also known as side-by-sides, these powersports vehicles provide plenty of thrilling adventures. However, in order to stay safe while riding, you need the right gear.

At RideNow Powersports Austin, we want you to be protected every time you take your UTV out. That’s why we’ve created the following guide laying out all of the essential UTV riding gear you need. Keep reading to learn more! If you’re in the market for a new machine, give us a call at our location in Austin, Texas. We are proud to serve San Marcos, Round Rock, and New Braunfels too!

The Helmet

The most important piece of UTV safety gear is your helmet. You’ll want a fitted and comfortable helmet that has a high crash-test rating and is designed for extreme sports. You can check out a motorcycle or motocross helmet.

Make sure you try on a helmet before buying. You need it to be snug but not too tight. This is the UTV safety gear that’s going to protect your head and brain, so it’s critical that it fits properly! Remember to replace your helmet after any impact event, or every five years.

The Goggles

Next, it’s time to protect your eyes. When you get in your side-by-side, you’re at risk of flying debris, allergens, dirt, mud, and more. That’s why it’s important to have a good pair of goggles as a part of your riding gear. Some helmets will actually come with built in eye protection. If your helmet doesn’t have this, invest in some eyewear. Make sure the goggles fit with your helmet. You can even find some that protect you from UV rays or have anti-fogging abilities!

The Boots

Now, it’s time to address your shoes. You can’t ride your UTV in flip flops or tennis shoes. It’s simply not safe or practical. An essential part of any riding gear is a pair of durable boots. These boots need to be protective, sturdy, and have a good grip. You should break in the shoes before you wear them while riding for the first time. Don’t forget to tuck in the laces so they don’t catch on your side-by-side.

The Jacket

After the helmet, goggles, and boots, it’s time to focus on the rest of your body. A padded jacket or one-piece riding suit is an important component of your UTV safety gear. You can also opt for a bright color or reflective vest for visibility. Make sure the jacket fits well and you can wear it over your street clothes. The jacket should be breathable and flexible so you have a full range of motion while operating your UTV. If you choose a jacket instead of a riding suit, it’s important to also have a good pair of riding pants that protect your skin from abrasions. Don’t forget this important safety gear!

The Gloves

Last but not least, it’s time to protect your hands. Gloves are a critical part of your riding gear! You should invest in a high-quality pair that is made of durable material so you can maintain a good grip on the throttle. In colder weather, insulated gloves will keep you from getting frostbite while riding your UTV. In warmer weather, a thinner pair will offer ventilation.

We hope this guide was helpful! Side-by-sides offer thrills, fun, and utility too. No matter how you use your rig, it’s important to be protected with the proper gear.
