The Right Apparel

When you hop aboard an off-road motorcycle, you'll want to be wearing the right gear. This means protecting yourself against the weather, against the road, and in the event of a crash.

It starts with head protection. You need more than to be simply wearing a helmet. You need to wear a crash-tested and well-fitting helmet. When it's too loose, it won't give you the necessary protection. When it's too tight, it can be uncomfortable to wear.

Then you'll want eye protection. If your helmet comes with a visor, then you are set. If not, you'll need something. Goggles are a great option. They stay on much easier than sunglasses and work to keep dirt, dust, and debris out of your eyes.

Next, you'll want to protect your skin. Your skin gets exposed to the harsh rays of the sun. Full-length clothing offers a layer of protection. Look for lightweight and breathable material so that you won't get too hot while you ride your dirt bike.

Finally, you'll want to protect your hands. Sweaty or cold hands struggle to manipulate your off-road motorcycle's controls. Riding gloves help give you the necessary grip to drive safely.

Stay Within Limits

When you ride your dirt bike, it's important to stay within limits. You never want to hop aboard an off-road motorcycle that's too big or powerful for you to handle. Otherwise, you risk losing control and damaging the motorcycle (or yourself).

You also want to stay on the marked trails. They are built that way for a reason! Going off the path may appear fine, but there could easily be unmarked obstacles waiting. Some of these may be hard to spot...until it's too late. Then you're suffering damage to your off-road motorcycle or yourself that was easily avoidable.

Focus

Riding an off-road motorcycle safely requires maintaining sufficient focus. You are riding in uncertain terrain at high speeds. You must to stay sharp so you can make quick adjustments to various situations. Maybe an animal darts into your path. Maybe a reckless driver barrels down the trail. Whatever the situation, you need focus to safely adapt.

One of the biggest barriers to focus is dehydration, which can create a significant brain fog. Pack along plenty of water bottles (or, even better, a hands-free hydration pack). Remember you get dehydrated quicker on hot days, so you'll need to be even more proactive when the temperatures soar.

Minimize Risk

It's impossible to prevent all dirt bike risks, but you can certainly minimize them! Stay off the trails when the weather is bad, such as snow or rain. Bring along a buddy in case you crash and need assistance. Keep your off-road motorcycle running smoothly and bring it in for maintenance if you experience any issues. Stay proactive and you'll enjoy a fun and safe ride!
